Why a whole slide usually makes a poor card

A single slide can contain a definition, an example, a diagram, and a heading. Put all of that on one card and you're testing whether the paragraph looks familiar, not whether you remember the idea. A better card asks one clear question and gives an answer supported by the course material.

For a comparison, ask what separates the two ideas. For a process, ask for the steps or the main cause-and-effect link. If a term is easy to confuse, name the unit or topic in the question. You don't need the largest deck. You need a focused set that covers the important ideas.

In Syllabloom, each source label takes you back to the document or slide. That makes a card easier to check, but it's not a guarantee that the question is accurate or useful. Read every card before you study it.

A practical slide-to-Anki workflow

  1. Add the class. Start with one course, then add its syllabus and relevant slides, notes, readings, or past assessments.
  2. Review the drafts. Read each card and follow its source label. Keep it only if the question is clear and the material supports the answer.
  3. Edit or remove cards. Make a question more specific, correct a detail, or delete anything repetitive or unhelpful.
  4. Export your set. Choose the Anki format, deck name, tags, and limits. Syllabloom creates the package after you've reviewed the cards.

Starting with course files saves you from writing every card from scratch. You still decide what belongs in the deck. If the slides don't explain a topic well, add the lecture notes or reading that does instead of asking the card generator to guess.

Questions students ask

Can I use the cards without Anki?

Yes. You can study in Syllabloom, so exporting to Anki is optional. You can review and edit the cards either way.

Can I choose Basic or cloze cards?

Yes. The Anki setup includes Basic and cloze formats, along with deck, tag, and export-limit settings. Check the set before importing it into Anki.

Does a recording become cards automatically?

Not in the public beta. Audio and video recordings stay on the current device; hosted transcription and recording-based card generation are not enabled yet.
